Farm Tender

Wimpak for sale

A co-operative of Victorian farmers has put the Wimpak grain packing and export plant in the Wimmera region in the state’s north-west on the market, as some of its shareholders look to retire.

The large grain-processing facility on about eight hectares at Minyip near Horsham was established 20 years ago and has 24 shareholders. Farming veteran Frank Delahunty, who established the Sustainable Agriculture Fund, is a Wimpak director with Horsham cropper Geoff Rethus chairman.

Mr Delahunty said pricing expectations were in the $8 million range for Wimpak, which he said had grown into a profitable business delivering 20 per cent returns on equity.

‘‘It was set up in 1998 by progressive farmers looking to add value to their product that was just being shipped away. They built it on a shoestring with a few silos and sheds and it’s now a small corporate enterprise that employs 12 full-time people with an independent management team and board,’’ he said.

The sale of Wimpak is being handled by Nicky Myer and Nick McIntyre from Elders Real Estate.
