Your Farm RulesI spoke to some very interesting Farmers over the last 2 days at the Pasture Agronomy Service (PAC) Conference in Wagga Wagga. Some of our conversations were with older Farmers who have been very successful in how they have nurtured their Farm businesses.

We have said this many times: If you have a mathematical mind in Farming, then you have an advantage. Knowing your numbers is crucial, and if it’s all clear to you, then you can make decisions that make the Farm money. It’s not the be-all and end-all, but I feel it’s an advantage.

Another thing I am noticing in Farmers who have built successful businesses over the journey is that they all have rules. Rules they have developed early and stuck with over the course. Rules with the principles that stay the same but with some occasional tweaks here and there.

These rules seem to serve these people well when there is either a boom or a bust. They have walking rules when everyone else is running, and they have running rules when everyone else is walking. These people are very disciplined about implementing their rules, and some would even be considered on the conservative side. Some have reasonably sized businesses, so small changes can mean big gains in time. Others use their rules to make more good decisions than bad, and over time, it makes a measurable difference. Do you have rules, and if so, do you stick to them? What are some of your Farming rules? Reply to dwaind@farmtender.com.au
